Mary was born in Tulsa, OK on December 25, 1921 to Mary Riordan and Robert Chambers. She was the Granddaughter of Arizona pioneers, Caroline Metz and T.A. Riordan.  Mary lived in California for most of her life and spent summers in Northern Arizona at the home of her grandparents, which is now the Riordan State Park.  Mary attended Immaculate Heart high school in Hollywood, CA as well as Marymount College and U.C.L.A. from which she graduated.

Mary wed her childhood friend John “Jack” Malmgren in 1947 and was a busy mother with 6 children, who always contributed to her community. She and her husband Jack retired to Sedona in 1976 where they were active in various community organizations including: The Muses, Sedona 30, the Sedona Art Center, as well as building and supporting Youth Recreational opportunities.

Mary was a lifelong devout Catholic who was active in St. John Vianney Catholic Church where she enjoyed taking communion to home bound members on Sundays.  Mary and Jack enjoyed traveling around the world as well as visiting their children and grandchildren. Mary enjoyed reading, playing bridge and knitting. She spent many years knitting sweaters and blankets for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who affectionately called her Gaboo, as well as hats for Mother Theresa’s babies.

Mary was a compassionate and generous woman who recognized the importance of giving back to her community. We will remember her for her kindness, love and eye sparkling laughter. Those close to her will miss her amazing stories of world travels, humbling journeys with the Missionaries of Charity, and her enthusiasm about who was pitching for her favorite baseball team. She was a calm presence who made no judgements and was always there to listen.

Mary died peacefully at home in Sedona, AZ on July 15, 2017 at the age of 95.  She was grateful to be cared for at home in recent years by her daughter Helen, her son Peter, her longtime housekeeper and friend Billie Armstrong, as well as Caring Hearts and Hospice Compassus.

Mary was predeceased by her husband Jack, to whom she was married for 52 years, her brother Robert Chambers Jr., her sister Rita Chambers Gannon and her son-in-law Robert Howard Davis. She is survived by her sister, Helen Chambers McPherson and 6 children: Caroline Malmgren Davis, Ann Malmgren Schaffer (Louie), Victoria Mello (Laurie Anderson), Carl Malmgren, Helen Malmgren, Peter Malmgren as well as 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 180 Soldier Pass Road, Sedona, AZ.  Interment will take place at a later date.
